Master of Information Science (MInfSc) Degree Programme


The Master of Information Science programme aims to:

  1. develop students’ knowledge and skills in conducting high-level research in information science;
  2. equip students with the skills for developing human resources in information science for academia and industry;
  3. produce graduates with the versatility and innovativeness to assume leadership positions in professional practice, research and training environments in the information industry; and
  4. produce graduates with the necessary competency in professional practice to serve as consultants in information science to African institutions, both in the public and private sectors.
Target groups

University graduates who are interested in professional practice or in pursuing academic and research careers in information science and technology.

Admission requirements

A good honour degree not below Second Class (Lower) in any discipline from the University of Ibadan or other universities approved by Senate. Candidates without a quantitative academic background will be required to take an appropriate ‘bridging’ course in statistics.

Duration and Mode of Study

The programme will normally last for a minimum of three and a maximum of five semesters of full-time study. Students will be required to undergo a six-week industrial attachment between the end of the second and the beginning of the third semesters of the programme.

Registration Requirements

  1. Students must register for a minimum of 48 units and a maximum of 60 units of courses at the 700-level, including all compulsory and required courses
  2. The compulsory courses, denoted by the letter (C), are: FSC 711, 712, 713, 715, 716, 717, 721, 723, 724, 725, 741, 744, 755, 761, 762 = 40 units
  3. The required courses, denoted by the letter (R), are: FSC 731, 736, 753, 756 = 8 units
  4. The elective courses denoted by the letter (E), are: FSC 714, 718, 726, 727, 728, 729, 738, 746, 751, 757.  Each student may register for up to five electives.

Determination of Results

  1. All courses shall be assessed on the basis of a maximum mark of 100 and the pass mark shall be 40.
  2. Candidates must be credited with a minimum of 48 units, which must include the units for the Project and all other compulsory courses, in order to qualify for the award of the degree.
  3. All the compulsory courses, four units of required courses, and the best scores from the other courses, all making up to 48 units, shall be used to compute the Weighted Average Mark (WAM) to one decimal place.

The list of successful candidates for the MInfSc degree shall be classified as follows:

Eligible to proceed to MPhil/Ph.D     registration.


Eligible to proceed to MPhil registration.


Eligible for the M.Sc. degree only.
